Misfortune befalls Job, and, in three cycles of speeches, his three friends give the explanation that this must be punishment from God for his sins, and they urge him to repent.
Job does not accept their reasoning and pleas for a response from God himself. Speeches by a young man named Elihu intervene before God himself responds to Job. God answers that he is the Creator of the world and is omniscient. But by answering Job, he has not abandoned him. Job repents and is restored to even greater happiness. The just may suffer in this world as a test of one's loyalty to God, but, as with Job, they are rewarded in the end. Three expressions in the Book have often been quoted by Pope Gregory the Great in his Moralia in Job and the Church Fathers: "In his hand is the soul of every living thing, and the life breath of all mankind" Saints Jerome and Thomas Aquinas consider a reference to the Redeemer and the resurrection of life.
And Job refers to wisdom and understanding: "Truly, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding. The expression patience of Job comes from the New Testament Book of James - "You have heard of the patience of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, because the Lord is compassionate and merciful. King James I commissioned a group of Biblical scholars in to establish an authoritative translation of the Bible from the ancient languages and other translations at the time, and the work was completed in The original King James Bible included the Apocrypha but in a separate section.
