The Rapture: What Is It? The Rapture is an " end times " event "eschatological" event where Jesus Christ returns for His Church and believers who are "alive and remain shall be caught up together…in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air" 1 Thessalonians This is the time of the resurrection, where each Christian receives his or her resurrected body.
First to receive their new bodies are those who have died as Christians, and then, those who are "alive and remain. We shall not all die but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet call. For the trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall all be changed" 1 Corinthians The rapture will be instantaneous, in "the twinkling of an eye" 1 Corinthians Scripture nowhere encourages us to try to determine the date of Jesus' return.
The timing of the Rapture sparks a great debate within Christianity.
Does it occur before, during, or after the tribulation period? The tribulation is a seven-year period that immediately precedes the return of Christ and the establishment of His millennial kingdom, which lasts for 1, years. Run by Thomas Ice and Tim LaHaye the latter of Left Behindfame , the Pre-Trib Research Center acts as a clearinghouse for Biblical prophecy scholars to share their work on the Rapture and their interpretation that the church will be raptured before the Tribulation.
Hundreds of Christian groups have tried to use the Bible to predict when the world will end, using a hardly clear-cut combination of events mentioned in the apocalyptic Book of Revelation. The early church believed that Jesus would return very soon, even during their lifetimes, and Christians have been revising that prediction ever since.
Cotton Mather, a Puritan minister who was influential in the construction of the Salem Witch Trials, announced that the world would end in Just kidding! Unhappy with , he soon moved the date up to ; when that year came and went, Mather suggested the world would end in While a large earthquake did shake Boston that year, the only thing that quickly came to an end was Mather, who died in February Mather is part of a centuries-long tradition of Christians who have made these bold predictions. Thomas Ice of the Pre-Trib Research Center distinguishes between the Rapture believers being carried up to heaven and the Second Coming of Christ Christ coming down to Earth, which will happen seven years after the Rapture.
While you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish. Maybe heaven is a story we tell ourselves in order to live. It is absent from other strains of Protestantism such as Anglicanism, Lutheranism or Calvinism, and likewise unknown outside Protestanism, such as in Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy.
Does it Matter Whether You Believe Pre-Trib, Mid-Trib, or Post-Trib?
The Rapture features prominently in several works of fiction, including the Left Behind series which also features the idiotic pilot scenario described above , and films including the Russell Doughten production A Thief in the Night. While the seeds for the notion of a rapture were planted back in by the Catholic Jesuit Francisco Ribera , who suggested most the events described in the Book of Revelation would happen in the future Futurism [note 1] , and expanded later in Puritan circles this doctrine was invented by John Nelson Darby a big cheese among the original Plymouth Brethren and the founder of the Exclusive Brethren and was popularised as dispensationalism.
Darby really, really wanted the sadistic plot devices in the Book of Revelation to be true, but preferably without the bit where " the righteous " suffer as well, so he seized upon this verse as ass cover his justification. The whole thing is based on a tiny snippet from First Thessalonians , :.
