ABOUT KATHY TAYLOR

And, she is more than ready to go home. Kathy has been working hard at Touch Stone in Conroe-- improving her swallowing, speech, balance, and strength. The therapies staff are talented and persistent. Her insurance coverage for neuro-recovery at Touch Stone ends December 11th and lots is being done to have a successful transition back to Beaumont. We have purchased a wheelchair accessible Ford van.

Thanks for your donations. A customized wheelchair and shower chair have been ordered. And, we will need other equipment an electric hospital bed and ongoing supplies. And, we will be hiring some part time home care workers to support Kathy. As many of you know, there are very few homes or apartments in SE Texas housing stock that have roll-in showers, wider doors, or other accommodations for people using wheelchairs. Our long-term housing plan is to build a customized wheelchair accessible house for her and Russell in Beaumont.

With her discharge in December, we will be using temporary housing apartment or mobile home until the customized home is financed, designed, built, and delivered. Whatever we select, it will not have a roll-in shower or other features that will come in the customized home.

Weekdays after 3 p. We will let you know when Kathy is settled back in Beaumont. And, a visit to her will no longer mean fighting the greater Houston traffic. Please share this good news update using your Facebook, email, or newsletter and ask folks to visit this page www. And, your donations to this GoFundMe account are profoundly appreciated.

Kathy--a wife, mother, my sister, aunt, grandmother, community member, and crime victims advocate needs help with the costs of her rehabilitation and recovery.

Kathy's Healing Fund

The stroke has heavily impacted her left side, her ability to swallow and talk, and her energy. And, her generous, stubborn, funny, strong, opinionated, and loving personality remains fully intact. She will need all that and more for recovery and rehabilitation. Her course of treatment has already included 24 days in Houston's Memorial Hermann Hospital with about 20 days in the neurological ICU. As of today and the coming weeks, Kathy will continue her rehabilitation in a SE Texas nursing home.

And, the medical and health care expenses to get to her fullest recovery are beginning to come into focus. There are deductibles and co-payments for most medical and health services she has and will receive. And, there will likely be items that are not considered "medically necessary" by the health insurance company that are important to Kathy's health, well-being, and quality of life. All donated funds will be used for Kathy's rehabilitation and recovery from the stroke. As many of you know, Kathy has been a tireless advocate for victims of drunk drivers out of the Beaumont office of MADD for almost 18 years.

With encouragement from Kathy's work colleagues, friends, and victims that she has helped, her family has set up this GoFundMe page. I am her oldest sister, Holly Hollis Turnham, and will serve as the page's administrator. Kathy has fought for people and justice her whole life. Now, she needs help to fight for her health, healing, recovery, and rehabilitation.

Kathy's Good News by Wilson Awasu, published by Outskirts Press

Building the accessible home will take 6 to 8 months. Please share this update using your Facebook or www. Update 8. During my 29 years working with the criminal justice system, I have worked to voice my concerns about people who drive drunk or drive drug-impaired. Because this is a preventable crime - we as a society - need to wake up and get Texas off the top of the list of impaired driving deaths.

This can be done by changing laws, holding repeat offenders accountable and supporting law enforcement in their work. Sometimes our system fails us, but we must continue to work together. Many people still need to realize that impaired driving is a violent crime and offenders need to be held accountable for the carnage they create. I want to thank you — the first responders and local law enforcement — for all of your work protecting our roadways. With your hard work we can continue this fight. I am glad I have had the opportunity work with you on this issue.

Update 7. We are very hopeful that Kathy will be able to attend the reception in person. We hope to see MADD volunteers and friends at the recognition event. Kathy is now at the Touchstone Nuerorecovery Center in Conroe, Texas where she is in therapy sessions week days until 3 p. Her health insurance benefits ran out during a shorter than expected stay at TIRR. With her continued need for rehabilitation and therapies, we found Touchstone. Touchstone is a campus of rehabilitation services with many walking paths, a fishing pond, and covered patio and large physical, occupational, and speech therapies departments.

New Genesis is the building with the large flagpole on the pond side. Visiting hours are 3 p. You can also talk to Kathy by phone from 5 p. She welcomes the calls. And, visits on Saturday are particularly welcome. Cards and being outside are her favorite activities. Still not clear when Kathy will be able to go home. And, we continue to search SE TX for a wheelchair accessible house or apartment to buy or rent. Your help is welcomed.

Please email me, Hollis Turnham, with any leads. Once again, we deeply appreciate all the love, support and prayers that you have for Kathy. Kathy Bell-Schexnaider's family. Update 6. Kathy has daily intense physical, occupational, and speech therapy sessions. The pictures show some of that work. She is using a slide board to move herself from a bed to a chair and the reverse.
