I plan on making a few soon! Oh I so needed to read this today!!! I have fallen into a black pit in some of my closest relationships and have been rather grouchy. I hate this part lf me! Please help from daily mom reactor. You are writing my story! The only way I get through is relying on the word of God- I try to run the fruit of the spirit through my thoughts.
The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. I love your daily words of encouragement they help me get through those days when I am feeling sorry for myself because my plans for my life are not the going the way I planned it. They remind me to say yes to God even on the days I want to say no. God is good.
Barbara Brown Taylor: In Praise of Darkness
I would be honored to be able to mail her your scripture prayer box. I know in my heart her soul would feel a little more love, peace and tender healing from reading a scripture each day from that amazing box. I am so heartbroken for these ladies, Lord. Jesus , You never promised us no heartache, but You did promise us that You are the same yesterday, today and forever. Please bless the marriages, the one with anguish over a brother on trial, the mother who lost her sweet boy and a child struggling to learn.
God lost His Son for us. Jesus was on trial for us. Life often seems so hard. Thank You, God, that You understand and love us. And thanks for ladies like Lysa and her ministry. Thank you for telling me that this little black hole is real.
Barbara Brown Taylor: In Praise of Darkness | Time
I live inside this hole sometimes and am confused by it. I am newly married and my husband had an emergency admission to the heart unit followed by surgery 10 days into our marriage.. He got drunk and sits in his chair with tv on and major depression. I made a vow before God and witnesses for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health. I am lost. It hangs like a cloud. Blocking the sun. All that is required of you is to have faith. If you still do not get the message, sooner or later it will be made explicit for you: the darkness is your own fault, because you do not have enough faith.
Having been on the receiving end of this verdict more than once, I do not think it is as mean as it sounds. The people who said it seemed genuinely to care about me. They had honestly offered me the best they had. Since their sunny spirituality had not given them many skills for operating in the dark, I had simply exhausted their resources.
They could not enter the dark without putting their own faith at risk, so they did the best they could. They stood where I could still hear them and begged me to come back into the light. If I could have, I would have. There are days when I would give anything to share their vision of the world and their ability to navigate it safely, but my spiritual gifts do not seem to include the gift of solar spirituality.
Instead, I have been given the gift of lunar spirituality, in which the divine light available to me waxes and wanes with the season. When I go out on my porch at night, the moon never looks the same way twice. Some nights it is as round and bright as a headlight; other nights it is thinner than the sickle hanging in my garage. Some nights it is high in the sky, and other nights low over the mountains.
Some nights it is altogether gone, leaving a vast web of stars that are brighter in its absence. All in all, the moon is a truer mirror for my soul than the sun that looks the same way every day. It is not often I pick up a book that I can't put down the proof of that is that I am usually reading books at the same time , but Laurie Short kept drawing me in with her story and several others along the way. The title is accurate.
Nevertheless, if we are willing and we are patient, we may see the larger thing that God is doing behind the scenes. Highly recommend!
Bible Verses to Find Hope: Scripture for Faith
Aug 20, Erin rated it liked it. Not phenomenally written, but a quick read. Encouraging stories of others' faithfulness through challenging times, but nothing that I had not heard before. For the right person at the right time this could be exactly what they need, but I didn't find that it was anything rave about or tell friends that this was a "must-read". Jul 20, Jeff Bobin rated it really liked it Shelves: christian-faith-development. A dark place. Many times when we enter one of those dark places we want to be anywhere but there.
We begin to look at people around us and wish we were living there life rather than our own. Taking us through her own painful places as well as the stories of people that have crossed her path Short illustrates, using the Biblical narrative, how it is in those dark places that God is often most at work in forming us in to who He wants us to be. But it changed me. You will be challenged to think about how much time you spend in the present. Many of us spend so much time worrying about the past or the future that we fail to see God at work in the present time.
Using the stories of Job, Moses, Joseph and Abraham interwoven with Jesus, Mary and Martha you find yourself seeing these stories with new eyes. That includes those times we head off in the wrong direction. Fear plays a part in all of our lives and you will be challenged to walk through your fears and put your trust in the one that knows where the story ends. How often do we return to what is bad for us because it is the known rather than take the risks God wants us to so we can experience the fullness of life.
As you move forward in faith fear loses its grip. This is both a personal journey and a look at how others have overcome or lived through the dark places in their lives. It is worth the read! Aug 24, Joan rated it it was amazing. This is a very encouraging book. Life doesn't always go the way we'd planned. God doesn't always answer our prayers the way we'd like. Short encourages us to not give up on God and the story He is writing until He is finished with it. She has included many stories including her own that could be depressing but the way they were lived shows faith in what God was ultimately doing.
Readers should know that the author's own desires were finally fulfilled. That could be hard to take for those still This is a very encouraging book. That could be hard to take for those still in a dark situation. Nonetheless, it is an encouragement to the faithfulness of God in an unexpected grace. I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.
