I love that this novel takes place in Seattle. I love that city! It follows twins Julia and James after they discover a mysterious cave full of beautiful crystals which give them special powers, including the ability to communicate with one another with their minds. Unfortunately, their fun is interrupted when James is brought to another plane The Sapphire Prism Cave is a very sweet story.
Unfortunately, their fun is interrupted when James is brought to another planet and loses his memory of his family, leaving his sister and their parents to try to figure out where he has gone and how to get him back. Overall, I loved the story. It was equal parts fun adventure and precious testament to the love and friendship unique to siblings. However, there was one small detail that nagged at me as I read: I feel like the adventure was unfairly tilted in James favor. James always seems to have the better abilities, the more exciting experiences, and he seems to come by the answers to most of his problems all too easily, leaving Julia in his shadow.
Including the Jómslibrary
At the beginning, I was able to accept it, given that, as James points out himself, he was exposed to the Cave first, and therefore had stronger abilities in the beginning because Julia had not been around the magic enough. However, the more they visited, the more the disparity between them became obvious. James had excellent gymnastics skills, he can levitate objects with ease, and he shows a high level of intelligence, wisdom, and natural fighting ability to boot.
Furthermore, he seems to solve every problem presented to him, both on Earth and on Carmesi, without breaking a sweat. He beats every enemy and solves every puzzle, setting records and rescuing the kingdom at the mere age of 11, and the only near-failure he does face only serves to further prove what a wonderful person he is.
Quite frankly, I would venture to call him a Gary Stu or a male Mary Sue, an impossibly perfect and charismatic character. She has much more passive skills, and her triumphs are much more down to Earth. And while I understand that, to tell the story, it was necessary for one twin to leave the planet while another is left behind, I feel Julia got a terribly short end of the stick. Despite this downside, however, I want to emphasize that I do not think this is enough to make it a bad story.
I am looking at it through the eyes of an adult who, while still enjoying stories for much younger individuals, is still unfortunately aware of all the dark corners of the world that an 11 year old reader has not yet learned to see. I am sure that children will love this story, and be on the edge of their seat as they wait to see what happens next. I love this book very much, though, and look forward to the next installment, and hope to see Julia shine even brighter as she grows until she one day matches the glow that her brother has already begun to exhibit.
