To these challenges are added, in the European case, the difficulties of constructing a supranational democracy. What response do the democratic parties have to the desire for participation by citizens? How do we ensure transparency in political life? What is the relationship between national and supranational governance? In Europe, how do we ensure the dual legitimacy of citizens and States? What are the political dimensions of the European crisis and how do we overcome them? While the Crystal Palace gardens were the first, large-scale and modern recreational space in the city, Serralves Park was the last recreational estate to be built in Porto.
For different reasons, their histories intersect with those of the International Exhibitions, whose meaning merits our reflection. Several Exhibitions were organized between and With artistic, cultural and social effects of varying impact, these events revealed the concerns and beliefs of each time and place. The conference will look at the Exhibitions from this period which contribute direct or indirectly to the understanding of the Crystal Palace gardens, as well as to the public green spaces in Porto that appeared in the following decades and were influenced by the novelty and dynamics generated by the Palace gardens.
Therefore, the goal is also to contribute to a deeper knowledge of a character essential to understanding Serralves in all its dimensions and pursue a line of research launched by the Serralves Foundation from early on. At the same time, many of the wealthiest nations refuse to assume their responsibilities and the humanitarian organisations, even those that belong to the United Nations system, do not find the means necessary to help the victims.
The past of the union is marked by success, either in overcoming extreme nationalism or in economic integration. For the countries of S For the countries of Southern and Central Europe, European integration was a decisive factor in democratic consolidation.
The Union also has a unique balance in the promotion of effective multilateralism. Currently, however, there is a debate between those who consider that this situation is merely one more crisis, in the context of a Union ever more united and profound, and those who consider as likely the decline of the European project. Schedule 10h00 - 17h30 Days 19 DEC Symposium "Right to the City: Criminalization of the Poor". It will debate the meanings and effects of the security-driven logic that rules the management of cities and their spaces, populations, manners and movements.
While the evidence is plentiful, the nexuses that articulate the government of security, the government of urban spaces and the strategies of privatisation of public space still remain to be understood as strategies of power, violence and production of markets. We will analyse current crowd control politics regarding the criminalization of the poor and the militarization of the police in both Brazilian and Portuguese cities. The symposium brings together artists, activists and academics from Portugal and Brazil.
After the conversation, we will screen a documentary by the Brazilian director, Rodrigo Siqueira. Using a series of psychodramas, the film creates a dialogue between two moments in Brazil's history: the military dictatorship of the s, which has left deep marks on the official narratives and the subjectivity of Brazilians, and police violence which, according to Siqueira, characterizes the present political climate. A hybrid work between tragedy and documentary, the film develops around the trial of Orestes, who killed his own father - an agent of the military dictatorship who had infiltrated the resistance movements - 37 years after seeing him kill his mother.
A crime of passion? A political crime? What is the distance between justice, truth and collective subjectivity? Orestes is the starting point for many questions. What is the perspective for international order for emerging powers such as India, China or Brazil? What is the role of the African nations and their regional organisations? What could be the role of the United States and the EU? How should the multilateral institutions adapt to the new power relationships? Is inclusive multiculturalism the alternative to the deficit of governance? Recent studies identify at least three great challenges: the emergence of identity nationalisms, political misrepresentation due to the very high costs of electoral campaigns, the future of participative democracy. Are these trends truly universal? How do these challenges arise in Brazil, in Portugal and in Europe? How should the democratic system be adapted to the new citizens' demands?
