In explaining this, I will now provide the dates for the earliest composition of the above texts: Genesis c. As you can see, the Enochic tradition was recorded far later than Theogony, however, the passing reference to the Nephilim in the Book of Genesis suggests that this tradition was already widely known during the 5 th century B. The Nephilim are also mentioned in Numbers c.

Therefore, I deduce that both religions are reporting on the same giants and the same war, from the historical perspectives of two civilizations fifteen-hundred kilometres apart. Now that this has been established I can make an equal comparison between the two, knowing that each text, is more than likely, referring to the same event. According to Isaar, the archaeological evidence suggests that mankind originated in Africa and slowly migrated North-East along the Fertile Crescent. It becomes quite feasible now, that Hesiod could have written his masterpiece, incorporating the local traditions of the region, as well as, the traditions of the Jewish exiles.
As stated earlier, both these texts are convoluted, and do not necessarily follow a chronological order, but there are extreme similarities, such as: the sexual encounters between the divine, and humans and animals resulting in semi-divine offspring; a great deluge sent from the high-god to provide justice; a great battle between giants, and a revolt that fails, resulting in imprisonment.
I think it best that I discuss the latter of these similarities; the revolt of Kronos and Atlas, and its parallel, the rebellion of the Watchers Shemihazah and Asael.

When they tried to mount heaven, Zeus with the help of Athena, Apollo, and Artemis, cast them headlong into Tartarus. On Atlas, who had been their leader, he put the vault of the sky; even now he is said to hold up the sky on his shoulders.

We can see from both texts various similarities, for example: their loss of godhood and subsequent banishment to hell; Kronos losing his position as godhead to Zeus, and Shemihazah losing his angelic divinity and leadership over the Fallen. Instead, from some divine source, there was great friendship among them, and in a single ark all sailed as long as the flood prevailed. When they could not live on account of loneliness, they begged Jove either to give men, or to afflict them with a similar disaster.
Then Jove bade them cast stones behind them; those Deucalion threw he ordered to become men, and those Pyrrha threw, to be women. Hon day he decide to demolish them, and Prometheus, the Titan who had made mankind, was warned of the flood Zeus was going to cast on the earth. And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights. On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark.
They had with them every wild animal according to its kind, all livestock according to their kinds, every creature that moves along the ground according to its kind and every bird according to its kind, everything with wings. Then the Lord shut him in … At the end of the hundred and fifty days the water had gone down, and on the seventeenth day of the seventh month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.
Bring out every kind of living creature that is with you—the birds, the animals, and all the creatures that move along the ground—so they can multiply on the earth and be fruitful and increase in number on it … Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it.
In both cases, the continuation of the human race was ensured through the placing of a select few within a wooden box-like boat. The Gracian mythology relates how Deukalion, king of Pythia, was informed by Zeus of the great flood which should destroy the human race. It states that Zeus or Promethius a Titan ordered him to build a vessel of cedar-wood, in which he might save himself and his family, and that the vessel rests on mount Parnassus. Murray Pub, p. However, I believe one of the more stronger parallels is that of the sexual encounters of the Fallen and the Titans. The sexual encounters between Greek gods and human women and also between Greek goddesses and human men are a common topic in Greek mythology;23 gods and mortals mingled and feasted together, a proximity that led to their sexual unions.
These fallen angels would cohabitate with human women and animals, which would result in the offspring of detestable giants and monsters. In conclusion, I believe that both the Greeks and Jews were in fact referring to the same tradition, incorporating regional folklore in order to make the tradition more personal.
I do personally believe, however, that the tradition of giants 22 Martin, C. My reasoning behind such an argument is based solely upon two concepts: the first being the similarities between Mesopotamian and Jewish religion, and in turn, Jewish and Greek religion.
